Swimming Pools in Spain - How Much Do They Cost To Run?

Costs of Swimming Pool Maintenance.

I was asked by a subscriber to our newsletter how much does a pool cost to run. Most people imagine that the pool should run itself but there are a lot of things involved in running a pool. The cost of the chemicals if you have a normal chlorine based system, the electric for the filter, the water of course. So in this article we will talk about the costs based on a typical 8x4m2 pool. Chemicals can usually be bought in tablets and as long as the pool is cleaned and has a bottom cleaner too, a barracuda is normal (Not the fish of course). They are placed in the basket in the skimmers and replaced every week more or less. The tablets will cost about 20-30 Euros per month. The filter will run for a few hours per day in the summer. It needs to be on a timer to do this automatically of course. You will need a set of tools to check the PH and emergency salfuman (The Spanish Cure All For pool problems and extremely toxic) With all electric costs and everything the upkeep of the pool will cost you around 100-150 Euros per month if you have no problems with it. You could also employ someone to do it for around the same price!!! Filling the pool depends on the size, the water company and the area of Spain. Filling a pool on the Islands costs an absolute fortune so you must maintain the water. However on the mainland water is so cheap it is unbelievable. A typical pool fill will cost around 40 Euros. Lots of people are not very green therefore and do not maintain the pool choosing instead to change the water every couple of weeks. Not my choice for many reasons one of which is that the "new" water is cold and needs time to warm up again. The other option is to have a shared pool in a house with a shared garden. The video below was taken in may at the start of our pool season and shows a pool of this type. The garden and pool are looked after by a pool and garden company, naturally, and the cost is 35 Euros per month paid quarterly for the pool, garden and electric. Much less because it is paid by all of the part owners of the garden. Anyway any questions of this type sign up to the newsletter and ask away. I will try to respond to just about anything within reason.
