Spanish Summer Means Holidays

Here at Valencia Property we are officially closed until September now. Getting away to cooler climes, visiting or spending time with the neglected family or simply sitting by a fan with a cold drink on a shady terrace watching the World go by and wondering where 80% of the World has gone. Yes, the biggest traffic day in Spain, the 1st of August, has come and gone as people headed out of the big cities and back to their original home towns and villages, their summer retreat or just for the sheer joy of joining a ten kilometre traffic jam in 35 degree heat before returning home exhilirated or frustrated (Delete as appropriate).

The business consultancy Grant Thornton estimates that 18% of Spanish businesses close down for the whole month of August (this is down from when I first got to Spain and it seemed everywhere was closed for a month) but most close down for a good portion of the month. On the other hand Brendy Boyle on his substack points out that 33.4% of Spanish people are unable to take a week away from home on holiday this year compared with the EU average of 27%. (As with everywhere there are haves and have nots in Spain)

Nevertheless, holidays in Spain are big. One of the reasons goes against the stereotype of people in Spain being lazy. Rest is needed. Hours worked are long and people need a rest and during the heat of the summer it's the best time to have that rest. It's difficult to work too. Imagine working outside in plus 40 degree temeperature in Andalucia all day and you'll understand why.

Our Plan For Summer

Valencia Property is closed for the summer (As we said we would be three weeks ago but we still got a mail on Saturday saying, "We are here now and want to look at properties"), but you will still be able to find the weekly blog post here, the substack notes and shorter articles here, the latest podcast will be out sometime next week here and we may even get round to adding something onto our YouTube channel here. If you send us an email it will be answered relatively quickly but we can't guarantee the usual speed. Messages will be dealt with and we always answer queries like the one I got this morning about whether there is a golf driving range around Valencia (There are two good ones in case you're interested).

If you are starting your journey towards buying your place in Valencia then you'll still be able to arrange a call with myself or one of my colleagues to set you off in the right direction (read more about them here) and our medium term rental venture Stepping Stone Rentals is open and welcoming guests to Valencia. Even our Valencia Remodels department is working hard to finish off a couple of projects before they have a truncated summer break.

However I hear you ask, "Apart from the background work what is your plan?" Well, as I'll be largely in Asturias we are talking about sitting around drinking coffee, eating cachopos, rice pudding and copious quantities of seafood, some exercise, walking in the mountains and along the beach possibly in the rain, chatting with Asturian friends, and probably taking my life in my hands with a bit of cider (I sometimes have allergic reactions to alcohol). Sounds like a plan to me. Will I do the Cares Gorge this year? Will I get to visit Bulnes again? Maybe, maybe not.

(The view from upper Bulnes. Yes that's the path back down)

When We Return

We are back and up and running on Monday the 1st of September. However, expect a really quiet week because kids go back to school on the 8th of September this year so things don't get moving properly until that week. This gives us a week to organise ourselves and start on our totally new projects, because yes, of course we don't stand still. Over the summer break we will be planning the next steps to increase our services to our clients, generally the happiest set of clients you will ever see, just check out our reviews.

Property of the Week: 285k Lliria

Really pretty and feelgood property just outside Lliria town. In fact despite being in the countryside, the metro station is only a 20 minute walk away, and a very nice walk it is too, along country paths. The road to the house is in perfect condition and in a couple of minutes you can be on the CV-35, and Valencia city is 25 minutes in total. Internet via fibre optic cable, so just to break that down for you, if you don’t mind driving another ten minutes past L’Eliana and La Cañada, you get a property for less than half the price of one there and don't have to sacrifice any of the comforts.

The house has 4 bedrooms and 2 full bathrooms, one of those a master. Originally it had the traditional Valencian layout of a country house, 2 separate living areas, one upstairs and one downstairs connected by an external stair. Since then however an internal stair has been put in, along with a nice extension to make the house that bit bigger. So, there are 2 living areas really, one downstairs along with kitchen and bathroom, and another space upstairs with the bedrooms. Both areas have working fireplaces and also air-conditioning. These AC units also heat of course but you can't beat the ambience of a real fire.

The outside area is low maintenance, so if you’re not here all year round you won’t come back to a jungle every time. Similarly, if you can’t manage or just don’t fancy all the gardening that comes with a plot this size. If you do of course, then borders and raised beds can go a long way to greening an outdoor space, or dig out some areas and throw down topsoil. There is a good sized swimming pool, raised to catch the cooling breeze and to take advantage of the views of the surrounding hills. There is a big storage space under the pool.

Around the back of the house is a secluded terraced eating area. It has a summer kitchen including paellero and a paved patio for chairs and a table. In addition there is a door from here directly to the dining room, so you can decide if you’re eating inside or out at the last minute. This property has a really pleasant feel to it, and has been amazingly well maintained, absolutely nothing will need to be done when you move in. For year round living or for holiday stays and some rental income in between, this house will work for a lot of people.
