The September 29th Spanish General Strike and Manchester United

Next week there is a general strike in Spain. You cannot miss it. Fliers by the UGT and CC.OO, the two main unions involved in calling the strike, are plastered all over every single spare piece of wall and graffiti that there is in Valencia. The combined positive effect of these fliers on the Spanish economy might well be greater than the negative effect of the General Strike itself. It has been a good time for printers recently I think you can safely say. But what will be the effect of the General Strike in Spain on the 29th of September? I am going to hypothesise that it will hardly be noticed. However if it is then there could be some big problems especially in Valencia. On the 29th of September Valencia play against Manchester United in the Champions' League at Mestalla. This brings up a number of issues. 1) Will the Manchester United fans be able to get here? The Unions have guaranteed a minimum service for the day of 10% of all flights that will be allowed to fly into the airports. 5000 United fans are expected to make the trip and in the past they have given a huge boost to Valencia's restaurants and bars just like whenever any other UK based team visit. 2) Will there be trouble if the fans get to Valencia and then cannot find anywhere to have a drink because all of the bars and restaurants are on strike? 5000 hungry and thirsty football fans doesn't bode well. Equally will the police, supposedly on strike, be bothered to do anything? 3) Will Valencia turn up to play? In theory according to the Unions this general strike will be total throughout Spain. Although according to the Government supporting El Pais newspaper it only has about 9% support throughout the country (Well they would say that wouldn't they) Equally and nothing to do with the, Valencia vs Manchester United match on the 29th September, there is another pertinent question. What happens to all of us who work for ourselves? Do I go on strike against my employer, ie me? Do I protest about what a terrible boss I am and how I make me work in awful conditions for little pay and reward? Do I mount a picket outside my office so that I cannot get in? These and more questions will be resolved by the Spanish general strike on the 29th of September but just to let you know, if you are visiting to look for a house for sale in Spain then I think I may be able to convince my workers to work on that day. If they don't I may sack me! Related Posts 1) Nick Snelling on The General Strike 2) How to Work For Yourself In Spain - Work In Spain
